Title: ‘Visual Storytelling Workshop with GMB Akash’

Dates: 6th December (Friday), 7th December (Saturday)

          13th December (Friday), 14th December (Saturday)

Place: Narayanganj, First light institute of photography

Duration: 4 days

Fees: 6000 BDT

Teaching language: Bengali & English

Workshop hours: 9 AM to 5 PM


This workshop intends to focus on how to achieve a new standpoint on one’s works and approach. The workshop with GMB Akash will help you find out your own visual language as well as practical and conceptual knowledge about how to confront real situation reportage making. You’ll be expected to engage in hard work to fully emerge yourself in order to move forward into another level in your photography. This will be hands-on workshop with shooting sessions, individual assignments, daily group discussions and editing sessions.



– Only 15 hard working students will be admitted for each session. Students will be granted admission to the workshop based on email confirmation. Therefore interested participants are requested to email at or call 01989052484

– The BDT 6000 fee does not include transport, accommodation nor on-the-ground expenses.

– In order to confirm your application, 50% advance payment is advised.

– In case the participation is not confirmed, he/she will get a full pay back of the advance only if he/she cancel it before three days of the workshop.

– If accepted, the participant will receive a course contract confirming the success of his application by email.

– To confirm registration, the participant must return this contract to us, signed, within three days, along with payment of 50% of the cost of the workshop.

– The rest of the fee must be paid by the first day of the workshop at the latest. The participant will then will receive a complete receipt and ID card.


– Candidates will be expected to arrive on time with their equipment and ready to photograph. Participants working digitally should bring their own laptops, and everything needed for digital editing.

– Participants have to submit assignments and for this they can use an external laboratory to develop colour film but at their own expense and within the given time.

What is Next?

– After completing the workshop and by submitting the final story a group exhibition in Narayanganj will be organized by First Light Institute of Photography with selected images from the workshop

– The selected portfolios of participants will be published on the website of First Light Institute of Photography

Video interviews in which the students discuss their work as well as what they learned during the workshop will also be posted on the website.

– Each participant will be awarded a certificate of completion of the course.

– Participants will be privileged to get a chance to sign up for exclusive membership of First Light to and to receive virtual guidance and different offerings

– The participants will be required to evaluate the course when it has been completed, to show their level of overall satisfaction and the extent of their acquisition of new skills. These evaluations will help us to improve our courses.

Summary of the workshop: 

Day 1: 6th Dec, Friday

GMB Akash will spend time talking about his own work and the different projects he has worked on. He will share his photographic references with participants and discuss the challenges of being a working photographer. He will present examples and ideas.

After the introduction session GMB Akash will start the portfolios reviews and projects definition. Each participant will receive an in-depth critique of their work which will also be used as a jumping board for the workshop assignments. Participants are highly encouraged to come to the workshop with defined ideas on the subject they want to photograph during the workshop. Those who are still in a dilemma regarding subjects will receive guidance. This is also one of the reasons for commending this workshop.

At the end of the day GMB Akash will assign students the story to do and the students will begin to shot.

Day 2: 7th Dec Saturday

Photographers will be shooting on their assigned project till 12 pm and all students will be back to the campus at 2 pm with prints. Then participants will receive an in-depth critique of their work and how to improve it. It will be structured in order for students to keep shooting on each one’s assigned project whole week. Therefore from 7th to 13th December participants will continue to work on their project and GMB Akash will review on them 13th December.

Day 3: 13th Dec Friday

Gmb akash will go through the work that students produced during the week till 1 PM with students. Following the review the students will continue shooting in the afternoon

Day 4: 14th Dec Saturday

This is the day of the final portfolio editing. Each participant will work on a large size edit of his/her images, and then they are printed and laid out on a table. The final editing is made during a one-to-one session with GMB Akash. All of the participants are encouraged to attend the sessions of the others. Once the final edit is done, the participants may work on the post-process. They are then asked to write a personal statement on the work, which will be used for the group exhibition.
