‘In the Road of Dreams’ – Introducing Larry Louie

January 7, 2014

‘Photography gives me an artistic outlet and expression and an excuse to travel and meet interesting people. It has also been a vehicle for me to highlight social issues that are important to me and bring to light stories that I think other people should know about’ – Larry Louie

GMB AKASH: Please share the greatest challenge/s you faced in your early career as a photographer. Is there any struggle that you overcame and has helped to transform you eternally?

Larry Louie: One of the greatest challenges that I faced early in my career as a photographer was to identify what I wanted to say with my photography.  Growing up in Canada where there is so much natural beauty, I initially did landscape photography, shooting beautiful mountainscapes, sunsets, and snowy trees.  But, I found that it did not inspire me to challenge myself.  About 20 years ago, I was in New York and there was an exhibition of B&W images by photojournalist, Josef Koudelka.  I was so enlightened and inspired by his work that I knew that was what I wanted to do with my own photography.  I wanted to create images of human struggle and interaction, but also to show that there is hope and happiness among the chaos.  I think the most important thing is to create one’s own signature in photography and produce images that inspire you.  That is when the best work comes through.
